Mental Health: Tips to Help Fill Your Cup First

We’ve all used the “life can get busy” excuse, and it’s easy to lose track of time when everything is happening all at once. But why is it that we tend to forget or neglect one of the most important things: our mental health? Between work, family, and everything in between, it’s no wonder our minds can get overstimulated and more than a little overwhelmed.

But here’s the truth: when we prioritize mental health, everything else starts to fall into place. It’s the foundation of everything we do. Without it, we’re like a house built on sand-unstable and easily shaken.

Taking care of your mental well-being isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s essential for long-term happiness, resilience, and overall health. Mental health impacts every part of life- how we handle stress, how we connect with others, and even how we feel physically. When we ignore it, stress can take a toll on our bodies, leading to sleep problems, fatigue, or even physical issues like headaches or stomach troubles - or worse (I’m trying to keep it PG here). But when we make mental health a priority, we start to notice positive changes not just in our mindset, but in how we show up in the world.

How to Prioritize Mental Health (Even When Life Is Hectic)

It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Sometimes small changes can make a big difference. Here are five simple tips I’ve been trying to incorporate into my daily routine, and maybe you can too:

1. Take Deep Mindful Breaths 🫁

Breathing is something we do without thinking, but when we’re stressed, we often forget to breathe deeply. Taking a few moments throughout the day to practice intentional breathing can instantly help calm your mind and body.

Try box breathing: inhale for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold again for four. Repeat as many times as needed, even one circuit has an impact. This simple technique helps lower stress, improve focus, and make you feel more grounded.

2. Go for a Walk 🚶‍♀️

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your mental health is to step away from the chaos and move your body. A walk-even just 5 to15 minutes can boost your mood, clear your head, and reset your energy.

Whether it’s around your block, through your house, or in a local park, getting outside (or just moving) is an easy and effective way to give your mind a much-needed break from staring at a screen and shake off the mental fog.

3. Stay Hydrated 💧

Hydration has a bigger impact on mental health than most people realize. We’re made up of about 70% water, and when we don’t drink enough, it can lead to fatigue, brain fog, and irritability.

Start your day with a glass of water and even consider adding electrolytes when you’re super busy. Keep sipping throughout the day, whether you’re working, walking, or taking a breather. Staying hydrated helps keep energy levels stable and supports your overall well-being. Tired? Drink water. Annoyed? Drink some water. Hungry? Drink some water.

4. Listen to a Favorite Song 🎧

Music has the power to shift your entire mood. When you’re feeling off, stressed, or unmotivated, play a song that makes you feel good. Whether it’s energizing, calming, or nostalgic, music can lift your spirits in seconds.

So, the next time you’re stuck in a funk, press play and let the music work its magic.

5. Use Short Positive Affirmations ✨

Positive affirmations are a quick, effective way to reframe your thoughts and boost your mindset. They help reduce negative self-talk and reinforce self-belief.

It only takes a minute or two to say something like, “I am capable,” “I am safe”, “I am worthy,” or “I’ve got this.” Say them out loud or quietly to yourself, whatever feels right. These small mantras can shift your focus and set the tone for your day.

Final Thoughts

Mental health is the backbone of everything else in life. Without it, we can’t fully show up for our careers, relationships, or even ourselves. By incorporating small and simple practices like deep breathing, walking, drinking water, enjoying music, and using positive affirmations, you’re giving yourself the care you not only need but truly deserve - every. single. day.

Start small. Keep it simple. And remember you're worth it.
